  To the Editor:

“Life After a Heart Attack at Age 38,” by Trymaine Lee (Sunday Review, Jan. 20), is a powerful testament to living as a black person in the United States. All things being equal, black Americans often carry undue — and in this case, unexpected — health burdens because of sustained racial stressors.

Many will benefit from Mr. Lee’s powerful testimony to the emotions surrounding his heart attack and his recovery. Thankfully, he is able to share his story and bring greater awareness of medical vigilance and personal resilience.

I, for one, will share this essay with students in my global health class this semester.

Donna A. PattersonDover, Del.The writer is an associate professor and chairwoman of the department of history, political science and philosophy at Delaware State University. She teaches classes on global health, African studies and African-American history.

  To the Editor:

I’m glad that Trymaine Lee survived his heart attack, but having gone through the same experience at the same age, I would point out two big mistakes he made that could have cost him his life.

One, never drive to the hospital if you think that you’re having a heart attack; call an ambulance. During a heart attack, an irregular heartbeat can lead to cardiac arrest and death. In the ambulance, however, paramedics can often save you by restoring your heart’s normal rhythm, as they did with me.

Two, if for some reason you must drive to the hospital, let someone else drive. Again, rhythm abnormalities can cause you to lose control of the car, leading to an accident, injuries or worse.

  To the Editor:

I noticed that most of the online comments on this article were written by and about men, ignoring the fact that many women — with even more family responsibilities — suffer heart attacks at similar ages.

My first was at 42 (with a 6- and an 8-year-old at home). I was told that it was a fluke and wouldn’t happen again since I had no family history or risk factors. But it did.

At 50 I suffered another one. I was fortunate to have no physical residual damage from either one, but the psychological effects never leave.

Fortunately, someone directed me to WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women With Heart Disease. Through the coalition’s education and community outreach program, I became a spokeswoman for women’s heart health. That decreased the helplessness and depression I felt after the second episode.

Turning negative events into a positive outcome has made a world of difference.

  To the Editor:

Thirty years ago, I had a heart attack on my 34th birthday. I felt the symptoms during a stressful incident dealing with employee theft.

I asked to be driven to the emergency room. The hospital sent me home, telling me that a man of my age and conditioning had heartburn. That night, I went to the emergency room at a different hospital. I was told not to worry and went home.

The next morning, as my pain increased, I called my father’s cardiologist. He said, “What you need is a doctor.” I was given an immediate appointment and then sent straight to a third hospital, where I was admitted.

Even in the cardiac care unit I was treated with antacids because the hospital doctors still thought that I had heartburn. Then, at 8 a.m. the day after I was admitted, I went into cardiac arrest. Good thing that it happened where my heart could be electrically restarted.

Thirty years later, I still go through periods of worry about my mortality, even though I have been healthy since, but my main takeaway is that people who say we do not need universal health insurance and a personal relationship with a doctor but instead can be treated in emergency rooms have no idea they are condemning people like me to an early death.
